|---|---|
| What is a contractor license bond? | A contractor license bond is a surety bond required by a city, county or state before you can get a contractor license or pull permits. It guarantees you will follow local building codes and regulations. If you do not, the obligee can file a claim against the bond. |
| How much does a surety bond cost? | In Illinois, most $10,000 contractor license and permit bonds cost $100 for the first year and renew for $50 per year when paid direct to the surety. A placement fee may apply to the original bond. Notary bonds start at $30, and local permit bonds up to $25,000 run $5–$10 per $1,000. Larger bonds and contract bonds are priced by bond amount and credit. We also write bonds in other states, where prices may differ. |
| Can I get a bond the same day? | Yes. Most contractor license and permit bonds can be issued the same day you apply, so you can file with the city or agency right away. |
| Is a surety bond the same as insurance? | No. A bond protects the obligee (the city, state or project owner), not you. If the surety pays a claim, you are required to repay the surety. You still need general liability insurance to protect your business. |
| Does my credit affect my bond? | Many smaller license and permit bonds are issued without a credit check. Larger bonds, contract bonds and some court bonds are underwritten based on credit and financials. |
| Where do you write bonds? | We write bonds for contractors and businesses in Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Indiana, including Rockford, Loves Park, Machesney Park, Belvidere and surrounding municipalities. |
| Do you offer notary bonds and E&O? | Yes. We offer notary public bonds, Notary Public E&O, Signing Agent E&O and Tax Preparer E&O coverage. |
| What do I need to get a bond? | Tell us the bond type and amount, the city or agency (obligee) requiring it, and your business information. If you have the bond form from the obligee, send it to us and we will take care of the rest. |
